Venture capitalists are investing in healthcare startup companies at a fast pace. Becker’s Healthcare published a list of 40 apps they believe are important. Some of these probably will not succeed but reading the list offers a good glimpse of the future of healthcare. The apps fall in a number of categories including telehealth, prescription management, physician reference, patient portal and house call categories. An example of one of the 40 apps is CareConnect introduced by Nemours Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. CareConnect is the world’s first pediatric-specific telemedicine app for mobile devices. The app enables parents to get medical assistance for a child without having to drive to the ER or make an appointment. The apps provides face-to-face consultation with a pediatrician around the clock for $49. The telemedicine service can handle a range of standard urgent care issues. The pediatrician can e-prescribe using CareConnect. Pediatrics is one of the growing list of medical specialties taking advantage of the Internet and mobile devices.
