Dear John,

The Merriam-Webster dictionary states that a mentor is a trusted counselor or guide, a tutor or a coach. While all of these definitions are true, I also think of a mentor as someone who believes in you, perhaps more than you believe in yourself. That is how I think of you and how I will always remember you in my life. Even back in 1992 when I first convinced you to take a chance on me as your executive assistant, I knew I was in way over my head. While you gave me plenty of coaching and advice along the way, you always made me feel that there were no limits to what I could do. Over the years, you helped me to see myself in the role that I now have, even though I would have likely held myself back without your encouragement and support.

While I have always been an optimistic person, you still reinforced that the glass is always half full, not half empty. You showed me how to build momentum on the team and then keep that momentum going. You taught me to work with no boundaries and no fear. You inspired me to follow my instincts, have a vision and the courage to be a change agent for the company. You reminded me constantly that there was only one IBM stock ticker symbol and to always make good decisions with that thought in mind.

You and I have made an awesome team and I hope I have helped you a little bit along the way in your journey with IBM. I know I may have softened you a bit around the edges but I did it with the best of intentions! While you have been in a very influential and senior role for the company, I always tried to speak the truth and help you see what was going on at the grass roots level with the team. You trusted me and you always listened.

I have so many wonderful memories of working with you over the years....our planning sessions at Pennwood, our exhausting trips to Austin, Comdex, Paris, Detroit, and so many other places. Our thousands of emails, hundreds of discussions and dozens of secretaries (well almost). We have been through a lot together and I hope we'll continue our relationship for years to come. I have the highest respect for you as a great leader, a mentor and a true friend.

Best of luck to you in your new role at IBM and as president of Attitude LLC. And now, to the moon, John!
