The IBM Forum 2003 is over now but I am continuing to meet with IBM customers to discuss
Internet technology directions including WiFi, web services, blogging and e-business on demand. My first visit today was at Singapore Airlines. The airline industry is a difficult one but Singapore Airlines has claimed a very distinctive place in terms of both their level of service and their business performance. Their senior IT management is impressive also. We discussed many dimensions of Internet technology in which they had a keen interest. The next stop was at the Monetary Authority of Singapre (MAS). The lobby of the building was typical of a large office building but the new experience for me was to get my temperature taken by the security guard. It was 36 degrees.

The MAS is very similar to the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank. We had a wide-ranging discussion about Public Key Infrastructure, digital signatures, and related technologies. After a light lunch with an IBM colleague I visited with the Infocomm Development Authority. This was my second temperature reading for the day. Some members of the senior IT staff and I discussed many Internet technology issues. They are very much on top of the issues and have many interesting projects underway.

Temperature reading number 3 was at the Land Transport Authority. The LTA spearheads land transport developments in Singapore. They take care of those who drive as well as those who take public transport. The goal – a smooth and seamless journey for all. The accomplishments of the LTA are laudable and I can’t do justice to describe how they have exploited the Internet to provide e-government services. From bidding to get a certificate for car purchase to paying a fine to renewing a driver’s license, they have covered a wide range of information and transaction capabilities. I was privileged to meet with Rosina Howe-Teo who is the CIO.

Not only was the temperature check impressive but so was the security. In order to get into any of the buildings it was necessary to present a picture ID. The security guard took the ID and return gave a visitor badge. Upon leaving, your ID is returned when you return the visitor badge. Simple and effective.
